In Episode 5 (air date: Nov. 9, 2014) Alison (Ruth Wilson) had an unexpected visitor. Her mother Althea was in town, creating an imbalance to the way things were. She insisted on some changes with the way Alison was taking care of her sick grandmother (Althea’s mother), and she also fought with Cole (Joshua Jackson), Alison’s husband.
The relationship between mother and daughter was clearly antagonistic. However, when Althea found Noah with Alison, she instantly knew what was going on and was rather pleased with it.
Meanwhile, Noah had to deal with a problem in his family, with Whitney (Julia Goldani Telles), his eldest daughter, involved in a bullying incident that made a teenager attempt to kill herself. Noah wanted her daughter to own up to her behavior and apologize to the girl, but the parents of Helen (Maura Tierney) meddled in the way they handled his daughter.
Noah and Helen fought because of this, and the issue became worse when his wife insisted that they seek financial support in the coming semester from her parents, while they take a break from work and keep an eye on their children.
There was also an incident between Noah and Oscar at the Butler’s home.
Lastly, Alison and Noah spent a few times together using a friend’s house to have their dalliance. It was a breather and an escape from the pressures and realities of their lives, that Noah even suggested they should one day runaway to Sonoma together.
