The Flash Season 1 Episode 3 Things You Can't Outrun

I’m always a fan of episode titles with double meanings, and tonight’s new episode of The Flash sounds like it could qualify on that score.

“Things You Can’t Outrun” could be taken literally, as the Flash ends up battling the Mist, a villain who can transform himself into a toxic gas, or figuratively, as the episode will deal with both another examination of the particle accelerator incident and Joe West visiting Barry Allen’s dad following his pledge last week to help Barry find his mother’s real killer and clear his father’s name.

As Barry (Grant Gustin) and the team at S.T.A.R. Labs work to capture Kyle Nimbus (guest star Anthony Carrigan), a.k.a. The Mist, a dangerous new meta-human with toxic gas powers, they revisit the painful night the particle accelerator exploded and killed Caitlin’s (Danielle Panabaker) fiancé, Ronnie (guest star Robbie Amell). Meanwhile, Joe (Jesse Martin) decides to finally visit Henry (John Wesley Shipp) in jail after all these years, but things take a dangerous turn when Kyle shows up looking to punish Joe for arresting him years ago. Meanwhile, Iris (Candice Patton) and Eddie (Rick Cosnett) continue to hide their relationship from Joe. Jesse Warn directed the episode written by Alison Schapker & Grainne Godfree.

Comic fans who dug James Robinson’s Starman run in the 90s might not care too much for this version of the Mist, who appears to be more of a common criminal than the multi-faceted adversary who clashed with both Ted and Jack Knight. We’ll have to give the producers the benefit of the doubt for now, as the show has treated comic book characters pretty respectfully even while tweaking them slightly to tell its own story.

We’ll also get our introduction to Ronnie Raymond, who we all know did not actually die in the accelerator accident but instead will pop up as Firestorm in December. His reunion with Caitlin Snow might not be a smooth one, but that remains to be seen.
