American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3 Edward Mordrake (1)

According to the synopsis, “American Horror Story” viewers will learn about an “old carny superstition” that is haunting the troupe -- the tale of Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley). The freaks will refuse to perform on Halloween because they don't want to risk summoning his spirit. But who is this Edward Mordrake that everyone is so afraid of? Bette and Dot (Sarah Paulson) believe that he is just a myth, but Ethel (Kathy Bates) warns them in the promo video that all the stories they have heard are true.

Legend has it that Edward Mordrake was a man that lived during the 19th century and was born with diprosopus, a rare congenital disorder in which parts of the face or the whole face are duplicated on the head. Mordrake wanted his second face removed, allegedly saying that his “demon face” would “whisper to him at night.” The story goes that doctors refused to attempt the operation and that Mordrake ultimately ended up committing suicide at 23 years old (although it’s argued today whether he was a real or fictional man).

While the validity of the story is uncertain, diprosopus is a real condition. And “American Horror Story” plans on tackling it in its own way.

TV Line posted a character description of Edward Mordrake prior to the start of the series. Played by “Hunger Games” actor Wes Bentley, the character is said to be a “dark tormentor from Kathy Bates’ past.” But that’s not all -- he’s also “hell-bent on revenge.”

That won’t be the only drama in episode 3 of “American Horror Story’s” fourth season. Viewers will welcome Emma Roberts to the screen. The actress, who first appeared in Season 3, “Coven,” will star as Maggie, a fortune-teller con artist and love interest for Jimmy, played by her real-life beau, Evan Peters. Jimmy will become “smitten” with Maggie, while his mother, Ethel, receives “life-changing news.”
